Nutrition is the science that deals with all the various factors of which food is composed and the way in which proper nourishment is brought about. There are different nutrients classified under two categories, the Macronutrients and Micronutrients. The Macronutrients are those are those that body requires in large amount whereas the Micronutrients are requires in less amount. The former includes carbohydrates, fats proteins and water, while the latter is available in iron, iodine, zinc vitamin A, B-group Vitamins, Folate and Vitamin C.

All the nutrients have their own significance and functions in the body. The carbohydrates present in starch, sugar and dietary fibers helps in growth. The fats include different types like unsaturated fatty acids, saturated fatty acids, Trans fatty acids and cholesterol.

You can get all of these vitamins from the food you eat. Also, with the help of sunlight, your skin can make vitamin D. Your own body can also make vitamin K. You can get the vitamins that you need by eating fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products, and meats.

The importance of good nutrition is nothing new and today, good nutrition is more important than ever. The keys to good nutrition are balance, variety and moderation. To stay healthy, your body needs the right balance of carbohydrates, fats, and protein --the three main components of nutrition.

You also need vitamins, minerals and other substances from many different foods, and while some foods are better than others, no single food or food group has it all--so eating a variety of different foods is essential.

Moderation means eating neither too much nor too little of any food or nutrient. Too much food can result in excess weight and even too much of certain nutrients, while eating too little can lead to numerous nutrient deficiencies and low body mass.

Nutrition Density:
How do you decide which foods you want to eat? Flavor? Texture? Convenience? Comfort? What about the nutritional value of the foods you eat?
Whenever you chose your foods, be sure to consider the nutrient density of the foods. Nutrient Density refers to the amount of nutrients for the given volume of food.

Nutrient density is defined as a ratio of nutrient content (in grams) to the total energy content (in kilocalories or joules). Nutrient-dense foods have a lot of nutrients, generally with fewer calories. One can compare the nutrient density using the amount of calories in the food.

Foods that are Nutrient Dense:
It has been accepted worldwide that brightly colored fruits and vegetables possess adequate amount of nutrients in them. Whole grain products, like most whole foods, are nutrient dense. Some other nutrient dense foods include dark green vegetables, low-fat meat, fish, and low-fat dairy and even fortified foods.
